Institute for
Intergenerational Studies

In 2009, Binghamton University founded the Institute for Intergenerational Studies (IFIS) to develop and implement cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that guides human service programs and practices that impact and serve people across their life span.

Composed of two organized research centers — the Southern Tier Center on Aging and the Center for Family, School and Community Partnerships — the Institute focuses on program development, education and training, research and technical support that help a broad range of professionals acquire the knowledge and skills to integrate intergenerational components into their work. It also supports University-community collaboration and public policy initiatives that result in effective intergenerational partnerships that make a positive impact on children, youths, older persons, and their families.

The IFIS is composed of two organized research centers:

Southern Tier Center on Aging

Center for Family, School and Community Partnerships

Affiliated programs:

Center for Trauma and Disaster Mental Health

Director:  Brian Flynn, Department of Social Work

Associate Director:  Sandy Witt, Family & Children's Services

Community Gnerativity Institute
