How do I declare the major in integrative neuroscience?
We want all integrative neuroscience majors to get off to a good start, so before you declare as an integrative neuroscience major, you must participate in a brief advising session with the program's academic adviser in S4-230 to review the course requirements for the major.
Stop by during office hours from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-2:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; or from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. Thursdays. Sessions are on a walk-in basis. Following your session with the academic adviser, you must complete a brief form to declare the major, have it signed by the program’s director and deliver it to the Registrar’s Office.
Where can I get forms/materials related to the major (i.e., Honors Program application)? These forms are available in the Integrative Neuroscience Program Advising Office, S4-230.
Where can I get information about the major?
Check out this website – you may find the answers to many of your questions – and meet with the Integrative Neuroscience Program's academic adviser (S4-230). You may also call 607-777-4100.
Peer advisers are also available in S4-230 during posted hours which change each semester based on student schedules.
I am thinking about attending graduate school with a major in integrative neuroscience. Where can I get information about this?
Check out our Careers in Integrative Neuroscience page and visit the Integrative Neuroscience Program Advising Office (S4-230) for graduate school resources. The Career Development Center (LSG-500, 607-777-2400) also has books on graduate programs, GREs, careers in science, résumés and job-hunting, as well as guides to online resources. You can schedule appointments with a CDC counselor by calling 607-777-2400.
How many courses must I have completed to declare the integrative neuroscience major?
To declare the integrative neuroscience major, you must have completed four (4) courses from the major, which can be electives or core cores. All must be related to integrative neuroscience and should be listed on the check sheet.
Will any independent study in psychology or biology count toward the major?
No. Only an independent study with course content that is integrative neuroscience-related will count toward the major. Discussion with the Integrative Neuroscience Program's academic adviser prior to taking an independent study course will clarify whether approval will be given for a particular independent study course to count toward the major.
What requirements will independent study courses fulfill?
Up to eight (8) credits of independent research may be used to fulfill integrative neuroscience major requirements. The policies are:
I've heard it's hard to get into an integrative neuroscience seminar. Do you have any advice? And how will I know which seminar I should take?
First, we recommend that you schedule the seminar as early as possible during your academic career. Second, to fulfill the integrative neuroscience seminar requirement, you need to take a 4-credit seminar from the approved list. You can take either one 4-credit or two 2-credit approved seminars to meet the requirement. A list of eligible seminars is posted before the advance registration period each semester outside the Integrative Neuroscience Program Advising Office (S4-230), at News and Upcoming Events (these are currently from spring 2009 and need to be updated) and is also sent prior to advance registration each semester to the e-mail account of all declared integrative neuroscience majors via the integrative neuroscience listserv. All courses that can count to fulfill the requirement are mandatory Pass/Fail.
How do I know if a course I've taken or plan to take at another college will count toward integrative neuroscience requirements?
Decisions regarding transfer credits are made by the director of the Integrative Neuroscience Program. To find out if a course taken elsewhere will count toward your integrative neuroscience requirements, bring a written description of the course (e.g., the catalog description from the other university) to the Integrative Neuroscience Program Advising Office in S4-230.
Note that there are many courses already approved for transfer from other colleges. For a list of approved courses, refer to Harpur Advising's Transfer Equivalency Tables, found at Harpur Advising Office (click the Transfer tab at the top of the page, then Transfer Equivalency Tables).
Who do I see for advising?
The Integrative Neuroscience Program's academic adviser handles questions about schedule planning, DARS, transfer credits and other academic issues. If you have questions about graduate programs, professional issues, research, etc., see your faculty adviser. Faculty advisers are assigned alphabetically. Check with the program’s academic advising office in S4-230 for more information.
How should I prepare for a meeting with my adviser?
You should first refer to your DARS report (available at BU Brain) and prepare a list of specific questions.
What do I need to do to graduate?
Questions about the mechanics of graduating (outside of the integrative neuroscience major requirements) should be directed to the Harpur Advising Office.
Have I fulfilled my all-college and General Education requirements?
Questions related to all-college and General Education requirements can be answered by the Harpur Advising Office.
