4:30pm-5:30pm Introductory Meeting for all International Students

This important meeting will be an opportunity to meet other International Students and to become familiar with the culture you will encounter in the United States. We will also review for you the characteristics of academic life at universities in the United States and answer your questions. If you attended a school previously in the US, this meeting will give you an opportunity to meet ISSS staff and learn about Binghamton University.

Welcoming dinner for new international students and University guests. Your Orientation name tag is your meal ticket for this meal only.

Eating on Campus Today: Graduate students can eat on campus today. There is a listing of campus venues in your Orientation packet. You can purchase your meals with US Dollars or US credit card.

All international students are expected to attend this meeting. Discussions in both sessions feature current international students, BU faculty and staff, Orientation Assistants and International Student Volunteers.

9:30am Session 1 - What You Need to Know About Binghamton University:

• This is “How To Get Good Grades” strategy and planning session. Learn what is expected of you academically:
• What your professors expect of you
• Academic Support programs and Research Assistance
• Software like “Blackboard”, an essential tool in many BU classes
• Who is your Academic Advisor and when to meet with your Advisor
• Resources on Time Management and strategies for managing your course workload
• Services of the Career Development Center - Career Planning
• Using the Library System at BU

10:00am Session 2- Strategies for Success at a US University:
Any international student who has not studied in the U.S. needs to attend this important session. International Students who studied in the U.S. will also find this session a useful refresher on key skills for study in the United States.

• Learn about the differences between Binghamton University and your home University system from a panel of successful international students:
• Discussions of characteristics typical of Binghamton University classrooms
• Who can help you understand what courses you should register for this semester
• How you can practice speaking English 
• Making friends
• Tips on managing reading assignments in English when it is your second language
• Learn what to do if you are unsure of your coursework and professor’s expectations of you

12:00 Noon Lunch

You can purchase your lunch with US Dollars or US credit card. If you have purchased a Sodexo Meal Plan you can purchase your lunch using the meal plan coded on your BU ID card.

1:00pm-2:30pm Bureaucratic Essentials for all International Students
             University Union, Old Union Hall
**Bring all your Immigration Documents to this event**
All new international students are expected to attend this event to have their immigration documents reviewed, signed and copied.
Be sure to bring your passport, I-94 Departure Card, SEVIS Fee Receipt if you have one and SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 to this meeting. If you have more than one SEVIS I-20 bring all the I-20s you have to this meeting. All students also need to bring the green New Student Biographical Data Form to this meeting.

2:30pm-4:30pm International Student Meeting
             University Union, Old Union Hall

All international students are expected to attend this meeting.
Ellen Badger, Director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services, Karen Keefe-Guzikowski, Associate Director and Shawna Szabo, Assistant Director, will meet with you to discuss current, federal Immigration Regulations governing the activities of students in F-1 or J-1 visa status. You will also get to meet the staff of the International Student Health Insurance Team, Terry Creeden, Coordinator and Lorraine Medionte, Staff Assistant, who will explain how to use your Health Insurance.
