SPRING 2013 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

PROGRAM OF EVENTS FOR

GRADUATE STUDENTS

 

Please note: Some room locations are subject to change. A final schedule will be available at Orientation Check-In on January 23rd.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23

University Union, Old Union Hall
Be sure to Check-In and pick up your Orientation packet

University Union – Lower Level
New international students need to bring their passport and immigration documents with them. You will have your picture taken and be issued your Binghamton University ID card.

DeckerStudentHealthServicesCenter, East Access Road
You may check in with staff from Decker Student Health Services Center, today.
If you have not yet submitted your Medical History Report Form, please bring it so it can be reviewed. To avoid delays, fill-out your Medical History Report Form before you go to DeckerStudentHealthServicesCenter.

University Union West - Room 325
M&T Bank staff will be available to answer your questions. If you wish you can open a bank account with M&T Bank. You need to know your Binghamton area address to open a bank account.

University Union, Room 209
New international students are required to take a short English language proficiency examination during Orientation.

Graduate Students:

1. All conditionally admitted students must take this diagnostic examination, no exceptions
2. All students with TOEFL below 80 must take this test.

If you have any questions regarding the examination or ESL Courses, please consult with Ms. Jennifer Brondell, Director of the English as a Second Language Program, located on the second floor of the Bartle Library, Room 2412, telephone (607) 777-6725 or email brondell@binghamton.edu.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 24

Decker Student Health Services Center, East Access Road
If you did not yet submit your Medical History Report Form, you must bring it to Decker Student Health Services today so it can be reviewed. To avoid delays, fill-out your Medical History Report Form before you go to DeckerStudentHealthServicesCenter.

College in the Woods Dining Hall
You can purchase your lunch with US Dollars or US credit card. If you have purchased a Sodexo Meal Plan you can purchase your lunch using the meal plan coded on your BU ID card.

All international students are expected to attend this program.
Discussions in both sessions feature current international students, BU faculty and staff, Orientation Assistants and International Student Volunteers.

This is “How To Get Good Grades” strategy and planning session. Learn what is expected of you academically:

· What your professors expect of you
· Academic Support Programs and Research Assistance
· Software like “Blackboard” an essential tool in many BU classes
· Who is your Academic Advisor and when to meet with your Advisor
· Resources on Time Management and Strategies for Managing your Course Workload
· Career Planning
· Using the Library System at BU

Any international student who has not studied in the U.S. needs to attend this important session. International Students who studied in the U.S. will also find this session a useful refresher on key skills for study in the United States.

Learn about the differences between BinghamtonUniversity and your home University system from a panel of successful international students:

· Discussions of characteristics typical of BinghamtonUniversity classrooms
· Who can help you understand what courses you should register for this semester
· How you can practice speaking English
· Making friends
· Tips on managing reading assignments in English when it is your second language
· What to do if you are unsure of your coursework and professor’s expectations of you

Welcoming dinner for new international students and University guests. Your Orientation name tag is your meal ticket for this meal only.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 25

All International Students are expected to attend this meeting.

Trisha Marrapese, Director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services, Karen Keefe-Guzikowski, Associate Director and Shawna Szabo, Assistant Director, will meet with you to discuss current, federal Immigration Regulations governing the activities of students in F-1 or J-1 visa status. You will also get to meet the staff of the International Student Health Insurance Team, Terry Creeden, Coordinator and Lorraine Medionte, Staff Assistant, who will explain how to use your Health Insurance.

**Bring all your Immigration Documents to this event**
All new international students are expected to attend this event to have their immigration documents reviewed, signed and copied.
Be sure to bring your passport, I-94 Departure Card, SEVIS Fee Receipt if you have one and SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 to this meeting. If you have more than one SEVIS I-20 bring all the I-20s you have to this meeting. All students also need to bring the green New Student Biographical Data Form to this meeting.
