Integrative Program of Study

The International Studies Certificate Program at Binghamton University: "Integrate your study abroad experience with the rest of your education at BU to create your own unique international studies program!"

To earn the certificate, students must fulfill all of the following requirements:

• 8 credits of foreign language at the intermediate level or higher. As an alternative, proven advanced oral and written proficiency in a language other than English (as determined by a proficiency exam with approval of the Coordinator) and one course (4 credits) in language, literature, or culture, taken in residency at BU.
• 8 credits in multicultural or crosscultural disciplinary areas, selected in consultation with the Coordinator. For language majors, these courses must be outside the major. One Languages Accross the Curriculum (LxC) course may be counted towards fulfilling this requirement as long as the student participates in an LxC study group.
• A minimum of 6 weeks of either (a) university level study abroad or (b) a work internship or volunteer experience (in the U.S. or abroad and with the approval of the Coordinator) in a setting where knowledge of a second language in addition to the student's first language is useful and/or crosscultural skills are essential.
• 1 credit independent study. A personal statement (5 to 8 pages minimum) reflecting upon the significance of the student's certificate experience. The independent study supervisor will be either the International Studies Certificate Program Coordinator or a faculty sponsor from the student's major or concentration.
