Preservation Department

The Preservation Unit of the University Libraries functions as an integral part of Collection Development and works closely with other departments to maintain the collections in usable condition for the long term.

The Libraries' Preservation Program involves both preventive and corrective measures, including:

  • Disaster preparedness
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Staff training in handling materials
  • Book repair
  • Brittle/damaged book program
  • Rebinding
  • Protective enclosures
  • Document repair and encapsulation
  • Reformatting

Preservation staff are also available, both to the campus community, and to residents of the Binghamton area, for consultation and referrals.
