MUS 599: Thesis
Requirements consist of:
| for instrumental or vocal performance majors , two recitals. |
| for conducting majors , one performance with a major ensemble, and two or more with other ensembles. |
| for composition majors , two substantial compositions. |
| for music history and literature majors , a written thesis that demonstrates knowledge of appropriate research techniques, and a defense of the thesis before a faculty committee. |
Comprehensive Examinations
All master of music students are required to take comprehensive examinations during their program of study, prior to graduation. The examinations consists of two components: an oral examination by a faculty committee and a listening examination. Details concerning these examinations are made available to each entering master of music student.
Additional Requirements
(Master of Music in Music History)
All music history majors must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one foreign language (German or one Romance language); proficiency is demonstrated by translating a passage from a reading in the field of music, chosen by the music history faculty. Piano proficiency must be demonstrated by the ability to play a Bach chorale. For more information on majors and courses visit the University Bulletin.
Minimum total = 126 credit hours, with 42 credit hours of music courses for the major.

Offered by Binghamton University in collaboration with the Tri-Cities Opera Company, this is generally a two-year program of professional trining in preparation for an operatic career. A minimum of 36 graduate credit hours in music with a grade of at least a B- must be completed. (In the two-year program, full-time students normally exceed the 36-hour minimum.)
MUS 599: Thesis
Requirements consist of:
| 1. A full recital, approximately one hour in length. |
| 2. Opera roles...(a) one leading role, |
| (b) two featured roles, or |
| (c) three or more supporting roles. |
