MUS 599: Thesis

Requirements consist of:

for instrumental or vocal performance majors , two recitals.
for conducting majors , one performance with a major ensemble, and two or more with other ensembles.
for composition majors , two substantial compositions.
for music history and literature majors , a written thesis that demonstrates knowledge of appropriate research techniques, and a defense of the thesis before a faculty committee.

Comprehensive Examinations

All master of music students are required to take comprehensive examinations during their program of study, prior to graduation.  The examinations consists of two components: an oral examination by a faculty committee and a listening examination.  Details concerning these examinations are made available to each entering master of music student.

Additional Requirements
(Master of Music in Music History)

All music history majors must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one foreign language (German or one Romance language); proficiency is demonstrated by translating a passage from a reading in the field of music, chosen by the music history faculty. Piano proficiency must be demonstrated by the ability to play a Bach chorale. For more information on majors and courses visit the University Bulletin.

Minimum total = 126 credit hours, with 42 credit hours of music courses for the major.

1. Theory & Musicianship - 20 credits (4 semesters) 

2. History - 16 credits (4 semesters)

3. Electives - 8 credits (2 semesters at the 300 or 400 level). 
Those with a double major are exempt from one 4-credit elective. 

4. Ensembles - 4 semesters (0, 1, 2 credits per semester)

Offered by Binghamton University in collaboration with the Tri-Cities Opera Company, this is generally a two-year program of professional trining in preparation for an operatic career. A minimum of 36 graduate credit hours in music with a grade of at least a B- must be completed. (In the two-year program, full-time students normally exceed the 36-hour minimum.) 

MUS 599: Thesis

Requirements consist of:

1. A full recital, approximately one hour in length.
2. Opera roles...(a) one leading role,
                       (b) two featured roles, or
                       (c) three or more supporting roles.
