President Stenger Seeks Honorary Degree Nominations

President Harvey Stenger invites nominations of individuals to be considered for honorary degrees for the 2012-13 academic year. Anyone may nominate. To begin the process on campus, submit nominations by Friday, March 16, to your dean, or directly to President Stenger if you are not affiliated with one of the schools.
Honorary degrees are awarded to recognize excellence and extraordinary achievement in the fields of public affairs, the sciences, humanities and the arts, scholarship and education, business and philanthropy, and social services; to honor meritorious and outstanding service to the University, the State of New York, the United States, or to humanity at large; and to recognize individuals whose lives and significant achievements should serve as examples of the University's aspirations for its students. The person's achievements must be both relevant and appropriate to the Binghamton University campus, so nominees with a connection to the campus or a member of the University community are preferred.
Campus nominations are considered sequentially by the President's Honorary Degree Advisory Committee, the SUNY Chancellor, the SUNY Honorary Degree Committee and the SUNY Board of Trustees.
To nominate someone, submit a letter of nomination describing why the nominee's distinction or eminence in his or her field justifies the awarding of an honorary degree and stating how the nominee's achievements are relevant to our campus. If you have detailed information about the nominee's accomplishments (vitae or Who's Who entry), forward this as well.
Maintain complete confidentiality regarding the nomination; the nominee especially should not know. No one already holding an honorary degree from any SUNY institution is eligible to receive another one. To check in advance regarding an individual's eligibility or for other questions concerning criteria and process, contact Chief of Staff Terrence Deak at 777-2131 or tdeak@binghamton.edu.

Lois B. DeFleur Academic Prize Announced, Nominations Sought

The Lois B. DeFleur Academic Prize is given to a faculty member or a group of faculty for an achievement that increases Binghamton University's reputation for excellence, innovation and collaborative endeavors. Achievements in teaching, scholarship and public service are all eligible for the prize. These achievements should rise above our general expectations for a high level of faculty performance. Faculty members at any stage of their career are eligible. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually for a specific contribution, as opposed to a career of accomplishments, distinguishing the criteria for this prize from those used in tenure and promotion decisions. To qualify, the contribution must not only be recognized on campus, but it must also have received acclaim beyond the campus from peers or an organization. Nominations should include a description of the achievement and its demonstrable recognition. These flexible funds are intended to enhance the awardee's teaching, research and/or service activities and, thereby, further the University's mission. While nominations may be submitted at any time, the final deadline for nominations for this academic year is March 15. Submit nominations to Michael F. McGoff, vice provost for strategic and fiscal planning, Office of the Provost.

Nominations Sought for Council/Foundation Award

The Council/Foundation Award for service to the University is the combined award of the Binghamton Council and the Binghamton Foundation presented annually to individuals from the University community. Four awards are given, one each to a faculty member, a staff member, an undergraduate student and a graduate student, who have served the campus with outstanding dedication and who have provided exemplary service and/or leadership to the University. Recipients receive a $1,000 check and a certificate. Nominations should be submitted using the nomination form at http://www2.binghamton.edu/bu-council/award.html and should include the name of the nominee, a current résumé, curriculum vitae or job description, a letter of nomination (up to two typed pages) and a minimum of three and a maximum of seven letters of support. All nominations will remain confidential and are due by Friday, March 16, electronically in pdf format to Laura O'Neil at laura@binghamton.edu. For additional information or questions, contact O'Neil at 777-4895.

Save Your Dec. 21 Pay Stub

Pay stubs and direct deposit advices issued on Dec. 21 include important year-end tax information for all faculty and staff. It is the only document that will include totals for some deductions that may be necessary for you to report to the IRS during tax-return preparation. Retention of this document will provide year-to-date health insurance premium, long-term care insurance premium, and union dues/fee-payer totals for 2011. These figures may be required when completing some 2011 income-tax return forms. These figures are not provided on the 2011 W-2 form, which will be mailed directly to everyone from the New York State Comptroller's office in Albany by the end of January 2012. Contact Cheryl Robinson-Boyett at 607-777-2129 or clrobin@binghamton.edu with any questions you may have.

If you need to make any changes, report them to your department so they may submit the necessary personal data change smart form to assure the change on record and the timely arrival of your W-2 form.
