January forum to explore campus issues
Members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual University Forum in January.
The forum, hosted by President Lois B. DeFleur and the five vice presidents, will be held Tuesday, January 13. The event will be held in the Lecture Hall and will begin with a coffee reception at 8:30 a.m. before the main presentation from 9-11 a.m.
This is the seventh year the University has held the forum to provide updates on campus initiatives and challenges and to gather opinions. Invitations to the event will be distributed shortly.
Sodexho goes online with new account plan upgrades
Beginning this week, anyone with a BUC$ or meal plan account can go online at any time to check account balances, make a deposit or review transactions. With more than 9,000 active customers, Sodexho Campus Services expects the new service to reduce lines at the Meal Plan Office.
“We want to get to the point where you can use your card wherever you use cash,” said Maria Skinner of Sodexho’s administrative and support services. “Improving customer service is our goal.”
The site is secure and accepts deposits from valid credit cards.
Students with a valid BU ID can activate their BUC$ account at the office in the old University Union or at the card management machine in the Bartle Library. The service is free. BUC$ accounts can be closed with unspent money refunded at any time.
BUC$ is now accepted at Bokays’ Flower Shop, Take One Video, the Bartle Library, Fine Arts and Science Library copiers, printers and microfilm machines, the Coffee House, the University Bookstore, vending machines and Munchies. For more information, visit dining.com or call 777-6000.
Applications accepted for Discovery assistants
Discovery Assistant applications for positions in 2004-05 are now available in all Discovery Centers, residential area offices, the Office of Residential Life, OCC, CDC, Campus Activities and Orientation and all academic advising offices.
The assistants help students with course selections, reviewing general education requirements and understanding the DARS. They also encourage students to seek out the resources and services of CDC and provide information on experiential learning activities. Workers also staff the area Discovery Centers from 5-10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday.
Workers receive compensation of the cost of a bed in a standard double room — $2,192 and an hourly wage of $6.50 for staffing the area Discovery Center. Applications must be received by February 2.
Study abroad opportunities offered
Applications are available for the National Student Exchange program for 2004 to 2005 and will be accepted until Sunday, February 15.
More than 170 universities and colleges in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam participate in the program, which allows students to study for one semester or up to a full calendar year.

: FOOD DRIVE:
Sodexho Campus Services is collecting food as a part of Caring Cans, a nationwide philanthropic event, at various locations until Thursday, December 18. Non-perishable food items can be brought to any resident dining hall, the Food Court, Chenango Room or the Susquehanna Room. All food will be donated to CHOW. Munchies, the campus grocery, in the University Union accepts packages for shipping through the United Parcel Service. Store hours are noon-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 3-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Effective January 1, new IRS regulations go into effect that change the method for calculating the taxability of refinanced (combining an existing loan with a new loan) loans issued by the New York state Employees Retirement System. Loan applications received by Friday, December 19, will be processed under current IRS calculations and regulations. For more information, call 1-866-805-0990.

Service requests can be submitted via the Physical Facilities web page. The system allows the user to track the status of service requests as well as review a history of requests.
