New office name consistent with divisional initiative
The office that assists faculty members in developing and negotiating grants and contracts has a new name consistent with its role within the University.

Research Development Services is the new moniker for the office, which includes four full-time grant and contract administrators—Lisa Gilroy, Kim Riley, Anne Wahl and Mora Harris—and two support staff people, Teri Bower and Martha Caganek. The office is headed by Stephen Gilje, associate vice president for research. Gilje is also the direct line report for several other Division of Research offices including Sponsored Funds Administration, Research Compliance, Laboratory Animal Resources, and Technology Transfer and Economic Development. Other offices within the division, including Research Advancement, Government Relations and two economic outreach programs transferred last summer from External Affairs to the Division of Research report directly to the vice president for research. The economic outreach programs are the Small Business Development Center and the Trade Adjustment Assistance Center, which are both located in downtown Binghamton.

The renaming of the office, which has simultaneously been known by at least three other names over the years, is consistent with a divisional initiative to improve campus awareness of research support services by embracing integrated marketing concepts.

Interim appointments named in Communications and Marketing
Chris Ritter, associate vice president of communications and marketing, has announced two interim appointments within the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Katie Ellis, director of media relations, is now interim director of communications and Gail Glover, assistant director of media relations, is now interim director of media relations.

Ritter will oversee the University’s web initiatives as well as the overall marketing direction.

“As we prepare for a number of major University initiatives, including the opening of the Events Center, preparations for the University’s advocacy day in Albany and the Empire State Games in July, I’m pleased that we have a seasoned communications and marketing team we can rely upon. Our interim team has expertise to manage these important initiatives and present the University at its finest.” Ritter said. “Our goal is to continue to provide the same level of effective communications that the office is known for as we assess our needs, and the University’s needs, to structure our office for the future.”

Ellis will oversee Inside BU, Dateline, B-Line and other internal communications. Glover will handle media activities at all levels from local through national.

SUNY statewide Student Financial Aid Day set for February 7
State University of New York Chancellor Robert L. King announced last week that SUNY will host a Statewide Student Financial Aid Day on Saturday, February 7, at 32 campus locations throughout New York state. These workshops are free and open to the public.

“This is a great opportunity for students and families to learn first-hand how they can take advantage of the financial aid that is available to help them pay for college,” King said.

SUNY financial aid experts will offer workshops designed to answer questions and provide assistance regarding the financial aid application, types of aid available and the award process. At most campuses, SUNY experts will also provide assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a form required for all financial aid.

Barker named executive director of Research Advancement
Susan E. Barker, director of communications for research, has been promoted to executive director of the Office of Research Advancement. Barker’s new appointment expands her role and underscores the division’s commitment to promote the growth of University research by enhancing overall access to and awareness of research opportunities and initiatives across all constituent audiences, said Bahgat Sammakia, interim vice president for research.

“Susan has been instrumental to the success of the division,” Sammakia said. “Her contributions in the area of research advancement and communications have consistently enabled the division and the University to meet and exceed research advancement objectives. I look forward to even greater accomplishments from her in her new position over the next few years.”

Stephen Gilje, associate vice president for research, said Barker’s leadership and organizational skills were major factors in the success of last spring’s statewide research symposium, Destination Discovery, as well as a recent regional workshop on the Small Business Innovation Research program. He also noted that the division’s website and its electronic newsletter Discover-e, both overseen by Barker, have regularly received state, national and international accolades. “Susan has the ability to interview faculty members, translate the details of their research into a readily understandable article, and still maintain the integrity of the science involved,” Gilje said. “Often the first time I feel as if I truly understand the research of a selected faculty member is after I read one of Susan’s articles about it.”

Prior to moving to the Division of Research as director of communications in 2000, Barker was a writer and editor for University Relations. She has been the primary contributing writer and a key member of the editorial team for the University research magazine Binghamton Research, formerly known as Inside Research.

Part of Library’s Reserve Reading Room closed temporarily
The study area of the Library’s Reserve Reading Room has been closed to allow an environmental contractor to evaluate and remediate suspected Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) residual from a removed fluorescent light ballast leak.

The affected area will remain closed until all Environmental Protection Agency clean-up standards are met and confirmed. It is expected the area will be closed for three to five months. The most likely exposure from PCBs is through skin absorption, and the potential risk of exposure is low.

The regular Reserve Room circulation of materials will be unaffected and the Library Instructional Lab will remain open. Nominations accepted for Commencement honorary degrees
Members of the campus community are invited to nominate individuals to be considered for honorary degrees for the next academic year. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, March 19.

Nominations are considered by the president’s Honorary Degree Advisory Committee and forwarded to the SUNY chancellor, reviewed by a SUNY Honorary Degree Committee and are finally reviewed and approved by the SUNY Board of Trustees.

To make a nomination, submit a letter through the dean if associated with one of the five schools or to the president’s office if you are not affiliated with a school. Describe why the nominee’s distinction or preeminence in his or her field of endeavor justifies the awarding of an honorary degree and state how the nominee’s achievements are relevant to the University. If you have detailed information about the nominee’s accomplishments, including a vitae or Who’s Who entry, forward them as well.

Those making nominations should maintain complete confidentiality regarding the nomination. The nominee should not know that his or her name has been submitted. According to the Board of Trustee policies, no one already holding an honorary degree from an SUNY institution is eligible to receive another one. SERVICE INTERRUPTION: New York State Electric and Gas has notified Physical Facilities that it may interrupt the campus’ natural gas service. When and if this occurs, Physical Facilities will utilize the propane plant to continue to heat buildings and supply equipment that normally uses natural gas. Operation of the plant will involve a large flame burning near the plant for approximately 15 minutes during start up. No change in operations will occur. FROZEN PIPES: Remember to keep windows closed and fan coil-heating units on in work areas. This helps keep pipes from freezing with the current extremely cold temperatures. In addition, if it appears that there is no heat in an area, report it to the Physical Facilities Customer Service Center at 777-2226, since a lack of heat may be an indication of possible frozen piping.
