Best Practices Expo April 14
Conversations with colleagues can often lead to the solution to a workplace problem or a more efficient way to get the job done. But finding time for those conversations may be just as challenging.

The staff of Binghamton’s Center for Quality is hoping to make finding those solutions easier, hosting the first Best Practices Expo from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in UU-Mandela Room. The event will give campus departments an opportunity to showcase their successes and learn from the successes of others.

Christina Knickerbocker, director of the University’s Center for Quality, said the hope is that colleagues will be able to learn something at the expo that they can take back and use in their area.

“I am hoping that colleagues make connections with each other that they otherwise may not make,” she said, “I’m also hoping that exhibitors will feel recognized for their contributions to the success of the university.”

The expo will showcase best practices in nine categories: technology and communication, recognition efforts, process improvement, planning, partnerships and collaborations, evaluation and assessment activities, exceptional service, innovation and training. In addition to the displays, café-style tables will be set up in the Mandela Room to encourage participants to talk informally about projects.

More than 35 campus departments will take part in the expo. Best practices on display will range from strategic planning done by the Employee Assistance Program to improve processes to an online Instructional Resource Center crated by the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT). Academic areas will also be represented, Knickerbocker said.

“There are some teaching best practices being shown, as well as administrative,” she said.

One academic participant, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will be showcasing how its faculty created the Compassion Practicum requiring students to identify, design, implement and evaluate an action that makes the world a slightly more gentle place as a way of combating the perception that engineering is uncertain and removed from broader life concerns.

Truman Foundation awards grant to Binghamton University
A $15,000 grant from the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation of Owego, N.Y. will help Tioga County students attending Binghamton University in the 2005-06 academic year.

Since 1998, Truman Founda-tion scholarships have assisted over 225 Tioga County students enrolled at Binghamton Univer-sity. In the current academic year, 142 full- and part-time undergraduate students who are Tioga County residents attend the University. Approximately 89 percent of these students qualify for financial assistance.

Mildred Faulkner Truman was born in Owego in 1897. Upon her death in 1983, Truman’s estate established a foundation to support non-profit organizations serving Tioga County residents with grants for critical needs, aid for capital projects and seed money for special projects and programs.

To qualify for a Truman Found-ation scholarship, students must live in Tioga County, be enrolled at Binghamton for the 2004-05 academic year and have demon-strated financial need. Both traditional and non-traditional students, such as those over 25 years of age, are eligible for aid.

Binghamton University celebrates student employees
Nominations are being sought for Binghamton University’s annual student employee of the year awards. Local businesses or organizations are encouraged to submit the names of Binghamton University student employees they would like to recognize.

Nominees will be judged on qualities such as reliability, quality of work, initiative and professionalism. Four undergraduate students, one graduate and an off-campus student will be selected as student employees of the year. In addition, a supervisor of the year will be selected to recognize the commitment of employers to the student employee program.

The awards will be presented during Student Employment Appreciation Week, April 11- 15. The theme for this year is “Shaping Our Careers Through Student Employment.” Student employees of the year will be officially recognized at a reception to be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, UU-Mandela Room. The reception is free and open to the public. The program is sponsored by Binghamton University’s Office of Student Financial Aid and Employment.

SOOT requests available online until April 29
Student Opinion of Teaching Survey (SOOT) requests are available online through Friday, April 29. Faculty must provide their Social Security number to access this secured site. After requesting SOOT forms, faculty are asked to print the confirmation and instruction sheet for use when administering the SOOT. SOOT forms will be delivered within three to four working days of requests. Watson School faculty should not use this site, as their SOOT forms are handled through the Watson School Dean’s office. Raisin in the Sun caps 2004-05 theater season
The University Department of Theatre wraps up its 2004-05 season with Lorraine Hansberry’s Tony-winning drama, A Raisin in the Sun. The play, the first written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway when it premiered in 1959, tells the story of a family living and strug-gling on Chicago’s South Side in the 1950s, whose hopes and dreams are constantly deferred.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. April 22, 23, 29 and 30; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the FA-Watters Theater. Tickets are $14 for general admission; $12 for faculty, staff and seniors; and $2 for students and are available at the Anderson Center Box Office or by calling 777-ARTS. Reggae performance scheduled for April 14
Reggae musician Matisyahu will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in UU-Mandela Room. Tickets are $5.

Now a practicing Chassidic Jew, he spent his teenage years as a Phish groupie. Following a religious reawakening, he chose to combine his new-found spirit-uality with his experience in reggae and rap.

Chamber Music Concert to be held at Anderson Center
Chamber Music Masterpieces will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall. Binghamton University’s acclaimed string faculty — violinist Patricia Sunwoo, violist Roberta Crawford and cellist Stephen Stalker — join forces with pianist Michael Salmirs, soprano Mary Burgess and guest violinist Rebecca Ansel to perform an afternoon of chamber music spanning three centuries.

Tickets are $15 for the general public; $13 for faculty, staff and seniors; and $7 for students. Tickets are available at the Anderson Center Box Office from noon to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, by calling 777-ARTS, online or at the door.

Student stages dance production on campus
Susan Schneider, a junior theater minor, will stage WISH, a student dance production at the Anderson Center Chamber Hall on April 14, 15 and 16. Schneider choreographed and is directing this student-run dance production that tells the story of friendships, relationships and the challenges of college life. The program incorporates jazz, tap, lyric, hip hop and ballet. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15, and at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16. Dillon Memorial Service Scheduled for April 7
A memorial service for Martin Dillon, dist-inguished teaching professor of philosophy, who died on March 10, will be held from noon-2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in UU-Mandela Room.
