PEC golf tourney planned
The Professional Employees Council will host its first captain and crew golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Vestal Hills Country Club. Registration from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner catered by Zazou’s immediately following. $100 per person or $400 per team. Fee includes golf, cart, on-course drinks, dinner and prizes. Prizes for men’s, women’s and mixed divi-sions as well as longest drive and closest to the pin. Behonick takes position as SEHD assistant dean
Provost Mary Ann Swain has announced that Tammara Behonick has been appointed assistant dean of the School of Education and Human Develop-ment. “Tammy has a diverse range of experience in higher edu-cation in the areas of human resources, financial management and budgeting, student advise-ment, grantsmanship, strategic planning, assessment, teaching, information systems and events planning,” said Swain. “Her superior knowledge of the Uni-versity, along with her leadership of the Commencement Committee and experience in working with many different offices on our cam-pus, prompted this appointment.”

Behonick assumed her new duties on Aug. 24.

Employee tuition assistance programs available
Employees interested in applying for tuition assistance can obtain information and/or application forms from Employee Benefits, LSG-528, or by calling 777-6952 or e-mailing esinger@bing-hamton.edu. Specific application information is located under each program heading. All the usual academic rules regarding enrollments, prerequisites, grading and degree requirements remain in effect.

• Space Available Program — for employees represented by UUP. Covers tuition for one course each semester taken at a SUNY-operated campus. Appli-cations are approved for those courses that are not filled with tuition-paying students. An applicant must not register for the course through the usual student registration procedures. Employees should submit their Space Available forms only. In some departments and programs it is important to check with the respective office well before classes begin indicating your interest in taking a class on a space available basis. This program can be used for classroom-based instruction only. It does not cover individual instruction (indepen-dent study, thesis, dissertation, etc.) enrollments. Applications should be submitted to Employee Benefits as soon as possible (recommendation is 30 days prior to start of classes) and no later than the end of the first week of classes.

• The Tuition Waiver Program — for University and Research Foundation employees. The percentage of tuition waived depends on the applicant’s full-time employment status, the degree to which the course is job related and the amount of available funding. Any course for which a waiver is received must be satisfactorily completed or the waiver is withdrawn and the individual is responsible for the full tuition cost. Applications should be submitted to Employee Benefits as soon as possible and no later than the end of the first week of classes.

• The NYS & CSEA Partnership (formerly LEAP) — for employees represented by CSEA. Provides either tuition voucher program or tuition reimbursement program benefits depending upon the educational institution. Eligible employees can apply for two tuition benefits during the April 1, 2005–March 31, 2006 period. Obtain further information and forms by calling the Partnership at 1-800-253-4332, option 2.

• The Management/Confiden-tial Tuition Reimbursement Program — for employees in management/confidential bargaining units. Will reimburse tuition costs for both credit and non-credit career-related courses at a rate of 75 percent up to a total of $1,500 per fiscal year, at an accredited school. Family Weekend Golf Classic
A captain and crew Family Weekend Golf Classic will be held Sunday, Oct. 9, at Traditions at the Glen, 4301 Watson Blvd., Johnson City. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Sponsored by the Alumni Association, individuals and four-somes of faculty, staff, alumni, students and the general public are invited to participate for $90 per person. Cost includes greens fees, cart, prizes and a meal imme-diately following the tournament.

EAP announces fall schedule
The Employee Assistance Program announces its fall 2005 noon-time and wellness programs for faculty, staff and retirees of the Binghamton University community.

• “Creative Visualization for Inner Peace” with Well Being Associates Faith Kessler and Kim Keuter from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in UUW-324. Free.

• “Five Wishes,” co-sponsored with the Alumni Office from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Chenango Room. End of life issues will be discussed by Action for Older Persons’ Deborah Totten. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. Free. RSVP to kbailey@bingham-ton.edu.

• “Divorce Culture,” presented by Sally Dear, from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in UUW-324. Free.

All new employees require I-9 form completion
New employees, including student assistants, federal college work study students, graduate and teaching assistants and adjunct faculty, must complete the I-9 form in person to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States before beginning work. I-9 forms can be com-pleted Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Payroll Distribution Center in UU-105. Commonly used documents for verification include passports or a photo ID or driver’s license along with a Social Security card or birth certificate. International students should bring all doc-uments, including passport, I-20 and I-94.

America East institutions ranked well by U.S. News & World Report
ncluding Binghamton, are ranked among the top 100 national universities in America according to the annual U.S. News & World Report survey released last month. Of the nation’s I-AA and I-AAA conferences, only the Ivy League had more institutions in the top 100.

Binghamton, ranked at 74 of all national universities, was second in the conference only to Boston University (60). Other America East schools in the top 100 were University of Vermont (93, tie), University of New Hampshire (97, tie) and Stony Brook University (97, tie).

U.S. News & World Report defines national universities as those that “offer a wide range of under-graduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees. In many cases, they place strong emphasis on research and receive federal money to support their research endeavors.”

In addition, Binghamton (30), Vermont (43), New Hampshire (45, tie) and Stony Brook (45, tie) ranked among the top 50 public national universities in the country.
