Comments are requested on results of 2005 strategic plan
With the Middle States reaccreditation visit coming in October, a document detailing the University’s progress on its 2005 strategic plan is now available for review at http://www2.binghamton.edu/academics/provost/strategic-plan-results-2010.html.
Middle States will look for how the plan has influenced actions the University has taken and whether there are things the University has learned or weaknesses identified that can be improved upon in the future.
The University seeks input on how its progress is being presented to Middle States, any comments on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the actions taken, and any other comments you would like to share.

Financial Aid and Registrar student services opens
There is now one stop for all Binghamton University students for in-person academic record and financial aid transactions, as well as financial aid counseling. On Feb. 8, the offices of the Registrar and Financial Aid Services began offering in-person services to students in one office location — SW-109.
“As we automate more services it has allowed us to consolidate and improve how we assist students,” said Sandra Starke, vice provost of enrollment management. “We are striving to have students come into the office only for those transactions where they need advice and counsel. Also, it allows us to have one contact point to give more efficient and improved service.”
Financial Aid and Registrar Student Services will be open weekdays from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. during the academic year, and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. during the summer in SW-109.
Services will include, but are not limited to: ID cards, course registration, financial aid advisement, loan counseling, scholarships, diplomas, proof of enrollment, personal information updates and undergraduate application for degree.
The joint student services will be led by current Associate Director of Financial Aid Services Patti Donahue. She will work closely with staff from the two administrative offices as well as University Registrar Terry Kelley-Wallace and Director of Financial Aid Services Dennis Chavez.
Online information will remain available via the Registrar and Financial Aid Services websites at www.registrar.binghamton.edu and www.bingfa.binghamton.edu respectively. Phone and e-mail questions may still be directed to their office phone numbers.
Faculty and staff will continue to access course building grading support services and working with assigned staff in the Registrar’s Office in SW-119.
Center for Writers event features alumna Cokal
Susann Cokal, author of two acclaimed historical novels and alumna of Binghamton University, will read from her works at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in EB-110.
The event, sponsored by the Binghamton Center for Writers, is free. Books will be available for sale and a reception and book signing will follow.
A native of California, Cokal earned a PhD in comparative literature from UC-Berkley, in addition to her PhD in English and Creative Writing from Binghamton. Cokal spent a year in Poiters, France, studying medieval history, art history and literature. Her first novel, Mirabilis, grew out of this experience.
About Cokal’s second novel, Breath and Bones, Publishers Weekly said, “This steamy historical novel … chronicles the adventures — sexual and otherwise — of its consumptive, red-haired heroine, Famke, from her childhood in a late 19th-century Copenhagen orphanage to her fate in the American Wild West.”
