Wallerstein honored by the ASA

The American Sociological Association (ASA) honored Immanuel Wallerstein, distinguished professor emeritus of sociology and director of Harpur College’s Fernand Braudel Center, at its annual meeting August 17 by giving him the ASA Career for Distinguished Scholarship Award for 2003. Wallerstein is considered a worldwide expert on American imperialism and the global dominance of capitalism and its impact on the Third World. Wallerstein recently published “U.S. Weakness and the Struggle for Hegemony” in the July/August 2003 issue of Monthly Review (www.monthly-review.org). He is also a professor and senior research fellow in the Center of Comparative Research at Yale University. Wallerstein will present “The U.S. in the Bush Era” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, in Casadesus Hall in the Fine Arts Buiilding. He is the first speaker of “The U.S., the World and 9/11,” a four-part lecture series.
