Agreement with Coke funds athletics, student activities

By : Katie Ellis

Binghamton University has signed an agreement with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Binghamton to be the sole beverage provider on campus. Final approval of the contract, which extends through May 31, 2013, has been received from the state comptroller’s office.

“This agreement represents the first time that an exclusive contract has been reached with a soft drink manufacturer,” said Carl Gilmore, associate vice president for Auxiliary Services. “The contract is similar to exclusive contracts at universities around the country and is the result of a competitive bidding process.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Coca-Cola will provide financial support for athletics and other campus activities totaling nearly $2.5 million over the life of the contract. In addition, promotional giveaways, sponsorships for fundraising events and an allotment of product donations per year in return for the exclusive right to sell its products on campus.

“We are very proud of this partnership and we appreciate the opportunity to be of service to Binghamton University,” said Jeff Blanchard, branch manager for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Binghamton. “We look forward to providing refreshment to the students and faculty, while also providing much needed resources for campus activities.”

The contract calls for Coca-Cola products to be served in all vending machines and at all food service venues and concession stands on campus. Coca-Cola will offer carbonated soft drinks, water, sports drinks, juices and teas to provide a choice for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The partnership also includes a venture with All Seasons, Inc. to provide a variety of snacks in the more than 170 vending machines on campus. Students will see an added benefit as vending machines change over to All Seasons — all vending machines in the residence halls will be equipped with debit readers so students can use the BUC$ system to purchase products. The BUC$ account is an optional, prepaid debit account that allows students to use their ID card as cash for campus vending and laundry machines, and for purchasing books and school supplies in the University bookstore.
