Binghamton takes top spot in 2003 Corporate Challenge

By : Susanne Thiel

For the first time in five years, Binghamton University captured first place in the large employer division at the annual YMCA Corporate Challenge, an event that drew more than 300 runners and walkers from across the Southern Tier.

BU racked up 189 points in the August 7 event, held at Broome Community College. Universal Instruments and BAE Systems tied for second place with 122 points.

“It was a team effort – everyone pitched in with a lot of cheering, enthusiasm and excitement,” said Joseph Walker of the Research Foundation. He co-captained the team with fellow research employees Sharon Sickles and Robert Snyder.

More than 30 BU employees participated in the Corporate Challenge, which involves a series of individual and team competitions: a 5k race, a 3-mile relay, an “executive mile” pitting top corporate executives against each other, and a predicted mile, where runners or walkers earn points based on how closely they finish to their projected time. Liz Carter, director of the Discovery Program, earned valuable points for BU by placing fourth in the predicted mile, just 12 seconds off her expected pace.

This year, three BU runners – Bob Pulz of the Watson School, Annette Acuff of athletics and economics professor Bong Joon Yoon – all ran under 19 minutes to place among the top 15 finishers of the 5k race. Pulz, Yoon and Acuff also took first place in the team 3-mile relay event with a time of 16:31. Kevin Heard of the Global Information Systems department and Walker also anchored three-person relay teams, finishing at 20:22 and 21:39 respectively.

Steven Gilje, associated vice president in the Division of Research, clocked 6:52 in the executive mile.

“It was a really fun event and we’re looking forward to next year to continue our winning tradition,” Walker said.
