BU to defer implemention of student records system integration
In light of the current economic climate, continuing the relationship with Oracle on the student system is not the most efficient use of campus resources, Swain said. “Therefore, our development efforts are being deferred until later in Oracle’s proposed timeline when we will re-assess the quality of the system.”
Binghamton has worked in partnership with Oracle for a number of years. In 2000, the campus implemented Oracle’s human resources and finance systems and then began working with other colleges and universities to develop an integrated student system. The Oracle Student System (OSS) was delivered in 2002, and staff from offices throughout campus, including admissions, financial aid, student accounts, the registrar, institutional research and the computer center, began testing the system. After a year of testing, Swain said it is clear the system will not be ready for use until at least 2006.
Swain said the staff members who have been involved with the project have learned a great deal through the partnership with Oracle and have developed skills that will allow the campus to improve on current systems while considering “best of breed” options for each office.
“Our goal remains consistent,” she said. “We will continue exploring and implementing processes that enhance our service-oriented environment for students, faculty and staff.”
