INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

BU wins second straight America East Academic Cup

For the second straight year, Binghamton University has captured the America East Conference Academic Cup for maintaining the highest student-athlete grade-point average. During the 2002-03 academic year, Binghamton posted a 3.07 grade-point average, ahead of runner-up Vermont (3.053) and the rest of the nine-team league. That mark was well above the conference-wide average of 2.97. “Binghamton University should take great pride in winning this prestigious honor for the second straight time,” said America East Commissioner Chris Monasch. “This success demonstrates the commitment to academics by Binghamton’s student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Bearcat fans should be tremendously proud, not only of their teams’ accomplishments in the athletic arena, but in the academic sector as well.” Fourteen of Binghamton’s 20 conference teams held grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher, and four teams recorded the highest grade-point average in the conference (men’s cross country, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse and baseball). The Academic Cup, established by the America East board of directors in 1995, averages by school the GPAs of all student-athletes competing in the 21 championship sports America East sponsors to determine which school is the winner of the Academic Cup. In its first year of membership last year, Binghamton won the Academic Cup with a grade-point average of 3.05. Binghamton student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 or higher grade-point average for nine consecutive semesters.
