INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Find out the secrets of the Sorcerer’s Stone

Members of BU’s Leaders and Learners Toastmasters club will become witches and wizards next weekend during a planned reading of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in Hinman Commons.

The live, complete reading will take place from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16.

Volunteers are needed to read for 15-minute segments, and to host/emcee for one-hour shifts. Host shifts begin at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. both days. Reader segments begin at 1 p.m. and subsequent quarter-hours (the last shift starts at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday).

“The plan is to have volunteers from the campus staff, faculty, students, as well as the community read segments of the book in a row,” said Hilton Baxter, coordinator for the event.

Baxter said the group is requesting any volunteers who would be interested in reading segments of the best-selling book, which follows the saga of Harry Potter, a young boy who is living among the Muggles, or “non-witch folk,” before he enters the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The reading will also mark the second anniversary of the book’s film release.

“There are certainly going to be kids with parents coming, and there are going to be Harry Potter fans coming to listen,” Baxter said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the readers even were in costume.”

Toastmasters is a national organization that was created last year as a club to help people improve their communication, speaking and leadership skills. The campus chapter was organized last March and now holds regular meetings.

Details, including how to volunteer, are available at bingweb.binghamton.edu/~toastmst or email Baxter at hbaxter@binghamton.edu.
