Opera of star-crossed lovers performed next week

Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor will be performed by Opera Verdi Europa at 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, in the Anderson Center Concert Theater.
The performance, sponsored by Susan ’65 and Stanley ’64 Reifer, is a tragic tale of star-crossed lovers from two feuding Scottish families.
During the opera, Enrico, Lord Ashton of Lammermoor, has fallen into political disfavor. In order to regain his fortune, he forces his sister, Lucia, to marry Arturo. Lucia secretly loves another man who attends the wedding and accuses her of betraying him. She kills Arturo and herself. When Lucia’s lover hears of her suicide, he kills himself.
Opera Verdi Europa presents more than 70 performances a year, combining the best of the opera worlds of Bulgaria and Europe. Ivan Kyurkchiev directs the performance.
Tickets are $36 for general admission; $31 for seniors, faculty and staff; and $18.50 for students. Call 777-ARTS.
