100% of education grads pass exam

One hundred percent of Binghamton University education graduates have again passed the recent Teacher Certification Examination, according to a state Board of Regents report issued late last month.

The report, issued in Albany, said that overall more than 95 percent of SUNY graduates passed the examination. SUNY teachers passed the tests at a higher rate than the other higher education sectors in New York state.

Approximately 4,487 SUNY-trained teachers passed the exams and are now ready to fill teaching positions in school districts statewide.

Ernest Rose, dean of the School of Education and Human Development, said BU graduates typically score well on the certification test, attesting to the "high caliber" of the students in the program.

"We admit very high level students," Rose said. "This isn't surprising...but this is the outcome that you want." Along with BU, the University at Albany, the University at Buffalo and the SUNY teacher education program at Cornell University had 100 percent pass rates on the certification examinations. Ninety-nine percent of the students in the teacher education programs at SUNY Geneseo and 98 percent of the students at SUNY Fredonia passed the two certifying exams.

More than 4,700 SUNY students from the 16 campuses that prepare teachers took the examinations that are required before individuals can be certified to teach. Graduates this year account for approximately 25 percent of all new teachers prepared in college and university programs in New York state.

The Teacher Certification Examinations for new teachers are comprised of the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written, which measures instructional skills, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test, which measures general knowledge, reading comprehension and writing skills. SUNY students scored a 97 percent pass rate on both tests.
