Mountainview ready for students

By : Karen Fennie

Madhu Mathew, a junior from Queens, and Joriel Guerrero from Long Island add their names to the Mountainview beams, right. Both live in Marcy Hall, one of the two new residential halls which opened this fall.
"Marcy rocks," wrote one student.

Another sketched, "Retnuh girls," writing the name of Hunter Hall backwards on the beam, which will be placed in the yet-to-be completed Appalachian Collegiate Center.

They were among the dozens of students, staff and construction workers who on September 3 attended the signing in the great room of Marcy Hall, which opened to students earlier this month.

The signing of the beams marks a milestone in the Mountainview College project, which includes the construction of four new residence halls and a dining hall. Work at Hunter and Marcy has been completed.

The three, 11-foot, 4-inch beams, which were available for signing, will be some of the last remaining pieces of steel erected. The beams will be placed in the collegiate center within the next few weeks.

Students, attending the event, expressed positive comments about Hunter and Marcy. "They're beautiful. I feel lucky to have gotten in," said Elyse Kerschner, a freshman Hunter resident from Albany.

Construction continues on the next two residential buildings, Windham and Cascade halls. Steel work has been completed and contractors currently are installing the metal decking and wall studs, along with underground plumbing and electrical work.

Steel work at the collegiate center is expected to be completed this week, weather permitting. The general contractor, LeChase Construction Inc. of Rochester, plans to enclose the buildings by December.
