Evolutionary Studies concludes first year

By : Sarah Lifshin

EvoS, a new campus-wide evolution- ary studies program, will conclude its first year with a seminar by an eminent scientist who pioneered research at the interface of psychology, anthropology and evolutionary biology.

The University of Pennsylvania’s Paul Rozin will address “Pre-adaptation and the Cultural Evolution of Disgust” at 4 p.m. Friday, April 30, in S1-149, during the final lecture of the program’s seminar series, which began earlier this year.

EvoS, headed by David Sloan Wilson, professor of biological sciences with a joint appointment in anthropology, is designed for those who wish to develop an understanding of evolution and its implications for human affairs in addition to the rest of life on earth.

“The idea for the program came from teaching and research activities that were already taking place on campus,” Wilson said. “There was already a campus-wide community of scientists and scholars who became interested in evolution and now we have made something that is much greater than the sum of its parts.”

Along with the seminar series, the program consists of an undergraduate and graduate curriculum that can be taken in parallel with any major or research concentration, resulting in a certificate along with a student’s diploma. Introductory courses are offered during the fall semester, along with an array of permanent courses, special topic seminars, internships and independent study opportunities.

Enrollment currently stands at 38 undergraduate and eight graduate students, with 41 faculty participants from 15 departments and other academic components. Wilson expects to see enrollment grow considerably but cannot predict how many students will be enrolled this fall. For more information, visit bingweb.binghamton.edu/~evos
