Just one year after construction was completed on Phase I of Binghamton University’s Mountainview College housing community with the opening of Hunter and Marcy halls, work on Phase II and Phase III has wrapped up on schedule and in time for the onset of the fall 2004 semester. The work caps construction of the five-building, $77 million project begun just two-and-a-half years ago with Cascade and Windham halls and the Appalachian Collegiate Center readied for students. “LeChase Construction Inc., the Rochester firm hired to manage the project, met an aggressive construction schedule and worked through the challenges of a very wet summer to deliver a high quality project,” said Larry Roma, associate vice president for facilities management. Mountainview’s five buildings can be called “green,” which means they’re energy efficient and they’re LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifiable. “Green” features include use of native plantings that require no irrigation; use of recycled, locally harvested and low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) materials; daylight views which reduce the need for lighting, additional roof insulation; variable speed drives for boiler and laundry pumps; and high efficiency lighting, chillers and motors.

The University and the Dormitory Authority, which supervised the project, took advantage of a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority program, which offered incentives to include “green” features.
