BU delegates head to Albany for Advocacy Day
Fourteen teams, each comprised of five or six people and made up of campus leaders, staff, faculty, community members, alumni and students, will travel to meet with individual legislators to stress “Binghamton University: Helping to Build Our New New York.”
“We are going to visit Assembly representatives, senators and key staff members who are critical in the legislative process,” said Cheryl Dimick, assistant to the vice president for external affairs and Advocacy Day coordinator. “We want them to remember Binghamton and the things we are accomplishing so they will want to support us.”
During the day, teams will meet with legislators, while other members of the campus community will staff informational booths to offer a glimpse of the work being produced at the University.
Teams will stress six key themes that describe current projects or upcoming events at the campus. Collector cards will be passed out that highlight the University’s Center for Advanced Technology; Empire State Games 2004; Quality and Unprecedented Demand for our Programs; Workforce Development; Economic Impact in General; and Research.
“We are going to talk about all of the positive and new things that we are doing at Binghamton and how we are working together with the community,” Dimick said. “Often, legislators are pleasantly surprised that we are not asking them for specific funding, but rather we come to them to share our enthusiasm about Binghamton. Then they usually ask how they can help and we tell them.”
