Swain changes course add/drop deadline

By : Saraha Lifshin

Following the recommendations of the Faculty Senate and Harpur Col- lege Council, Binghamton University Provost Mary Ann Swain has changed the add/drop deadlines beginning this fall semester. The drop deadline will change to midnight on the Friday of the second week of classes, and the add deadline will change to midnight on the Sunday immediately preceding the third week of classes.

A new course withdrawal period will extend from the drop deadline until the ninth week. Students who drop courses though the BUSI system during this period will receive a grade of W. Deadlines for summer courses and variable-credit courses will be adjusted accordingly.

Current policies and procedures regarding the grade option deadline remain unchanged. The change comes after the senate initially recommended last fall to have the two deadlines coincide on the 10th business day of each semester. Following the senate’s advisory recommendation, Swain made her decision after further discussion with faculty, staff and students.

The new deadlines will be similar to the deadlines of SUNY’s three other University Centers, which each have a two-week drop deadline.

During the senate debate, supporters of the change said that the current drop deadline in the ninth week of classes disrupts classes and leaves empty seats that could have been filled by other students. Opponents argued that moving the deadline up would not provide students with the freedom to experiment in courses and could adversely affect GPAs. Students still will, however, be able to opt for pass/fail grading though the end of the ninth week, subject to individual school policies.

The policy for dropping a class after the ninth week has not changed. In order to drop a class after the deadline, a student must petition and demonstrate extraordinary circumstances. Approved petitions result in a withdrawal grade (W or WP/WF, depending on the school of the student) being placed next to the course on the student’s transcript.
