Summers thanks students for input in task force research
In a letter released to students this week, Rodger Summers, vice president for student affairs and chairman of the task force, thanked students for their efforts and input and said they have been valuable in the task force’s research.
“We wanted to listen to your voices as we reviewed our policies, information, activities and programs,” Summers wrote. “We wanted you to know how important your comments were and thank you again for your input.”
Last semester, Summers distributed a letter to students asking for help and advice on how to decrease problems associated with alcohol use both on and off campus. Summers had received reports of alcohol-related sexual assaults, vandalism and property damage and an alcohol-induced emergency hospitalization since the beginning of the academic year.
Summers asked students to provide input on how to deal with the problems — offering information from creating new initiatives for reducing risks associated with alcohol to stricter sanctions for violations of the alcohol policy. He received approximately 100 replies from students campus wide.
The task force was formed last year as part of a SUNY-wide initiative to combat alcohol and alcohol-related problems at each academic institution. The task force also recommends and oversees changes to existing programs and policies.
The task force is also debating the pros and cons of any changes to University student sanctions as a result of alcohol or drug-related violations.
