INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

SA elects new executive board

After two elections during recent weeks, Binghamton University’s Matthew Schneider was elected Student Association president for the 2004-05 academic year.

“I believe that the SA has the potential to achieve more than it has, to include more students and work harder toward making BU a place we all feel passionate about,” Schneider said. “As someone with fresh ideas and a willingness to work hard for positive and visible change, I felt running for president would be the most effective way to make an impact on the University.” Schneider won a run-off with 547, or 54 percent, of votes cast, beating incumbent Jordan Peck, who received 470 votes, or 46 percent. Schneider plans to work toward getting more students involved with campus activities, and also hopes to resurrect the Student Advocate, the SA newspaper, to increase communication between student organizations and all students.

In other election results, Kira Sandlar was elected academic vice president, beating Anna Rodak with 62 percent of the votes. Si Yang was elected vice president for multicultural affairs, receiving 1,197 or 57 percent, of all votes.

Three out of six executive board members were re-elected. Michael Schordine was elected executive vice president, while Nicole Mendolera won the financial vice president race. Jason Kupperman was re-elected vice president for university programming. Students also had the opportunity to voice their opinion on whether to keep the student activity fee mandatory. Approximately 71 percent of students voted to retain the activity fee, while 60 percent voted to increase the fee by $3.75.
