BU summer camps begin soon

Binghamton University will host a variety of special camps and activities this summer, in addition to two summer sessions, June 1 – July 2 and July 12 – August 13. Times and locations to be announced. A listing of some activities follows:

Summer Youth Musical Theatre Workshop The workshop, a three-week program, held from July 26-August 15, offers youth ages 12-18 the opportunity to participate in a real musical production of The Secret Garden while learning new skills and developing experience. Students will prepare a production of the musical, complete with actors, singers and chorus, for staging in a BU theater. They will receive instruction in voice, acting, improvisation and movement, as well as the technical aspects of theater. Prior auditions are required.

Summer Dance Institute The Summer Dance Institute will be held from July 12-23 for dancers 10 and older with at least five years of training. It concludes with a dance recital. The program is for both residential and commuter students, and includes a trip to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center to see the New York City Ballet.

Archaeology for Kids The mini-course, which will be offered from July 12-15 and July 13-16, is designed to introduce students between the ages of 9-13 to archaeology. Participants will spend three days on campus learning archaeological concepts through hands-on, interactive activities. The program fulfills many of the requirements for the Boy Scouts’ archaeology badge. The enrollment limit has been reached. Call 777-6857 to place your child on the waiting list.

Junior Bearcat Club The Junior Bearcat Summer Fun Club will be offered July 12-16 for children between 6 and 10 years old. The camp will feature games, arts and crafts, sports, daily swimming, hiking, campus tours and guest speakers, among other activities. Pre-school camp Campus Pre-School’s summer Rainbow Camp, for children ages 5-6, will run July 12-August 13. Children may attend for the entire five weeks or for one-week blocks. Cost is $650 for the five-week program and $140 for one week. A limited number of spaces are still available. For more information, call the Campus Pre-School at 777-2695.

Kids Explore! The annual one-week summer camp for children will be held August 16-20. Held in collaboration with the School of Education and Human Development’s Division of Professional Development and the Vestal School Foundation, the camp is designed as an inquiry-based science experience for children finishing grades 1-7 and provides exposure to hands-on experiential learning. Summer Sports Camps Summer sports camps run independently of the University. Times and locations to be announced. Camps will be offered in the following areas:

Lacrosse — The boys/girls U13 and girls lacrosse camps have been cancelled.

Tennis — Tennis lessons, run by Mike Stevens, will be offered throughout the summer. For more information or to schedule a session, contact Stevens, head women’s tennis coach, at 777-6682 or email mstevens@binghamton.edu.

Baseball — Two baseball camps, run by Mike Collins, will be offered. A summer skills camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 5-8. The camp, for players ages 13-18, costs $130. A youth day camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12-15. The camp, which is for ages 8-12, will feature instruction focusing on every phase of baseball. Cost is $150. Sports Training — Four sessions of sports training camps will cover proper weightlifting techniques, speed training, flexibility exercises, agility and conditioning drills. The instructor is Bryan McGovern, head strength and conditioning coach. The co-ed classes for those in grades 9-12 will be from 4-5:15 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The three-week session will run June 21 to July 8 for $125, the four-week session from June 21 to July 15 for $150, the five-week session from June 21 to July 22 for $175 and the six-week session from June 21 to July 29 for $200. Basketball — Several sessions of basketball camps will be offered throughout the summer. A co-ed one-day shooting clinic will be offered August 7, teaching the basics of fundamentally sound shooting techniques for ages 8-18. Cost is $60. A boys’ day camp, which will be held for ages 8-18, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 2-6. Cost is $200. A girls’ instructional day camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 19-23 for ages 11-18. Cost is $250. A co-ed half day camp will be held from 9-11:45 a.m. July 19-23. The camp, for ages 5-10, is designed for beginning boys and girls with emphasis on fundamental skills. Cost is $105. For further information, call 777-6450 or 777-6438.

Volleyball — A girls’ volleyball clinic will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 17-18 and is open to females in grades 10-12 who are currently participating on a high school volleyball team. Cost is $50 per person. A volleyball camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. August 8-11 for females in grades 6-12. Campers have the option of commuting or residing on campus. Diving — Several Southern Tier United Diving Camps will be offered. A beginner/novice diving camp for ages 6-18 years old will be offered in two sessions, 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30-3:30 p.m. June 28 to July 2. Cost is $150. A modified/varsity diving camp for ages 11-18 will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 5-9 and July 12-16. Cost is $240. A mixed and matched diving camp will be offered in two sessions from 9 a.m. to noon (beginner/novice) and 12:30-3:30 p.m. (modified/varsity) July 19-23. Cost is $150. Cheerleading — UCA Cheerleading will offer an overnight and commuter camp from July 20-23. Cost is $232 for residential students, $217 for resident advisors, $140 for commuter students, $50 for commuter advisors and $237 for elite residential students. Soccer — A co-ed youth day camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28 to July 2. The camp is designed for the recreational soccer player ages 5-13. Each day concludes with a half-hour open swim in the West Gym pool. Cost is $215. A girls’ residential camp will be offered July 18-July 22. Cost is $399 per player. Siblings and groups receive a $10 discount per player. Two sessions of co-ed soccer day camps will be offered. The first session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 19-23 for ages 5-8. Cost is $95.
