Binghamton has banner year in fundraising

The 2003-04 academic year proved to be an unprecedented year for fund-raising with alumni, community members and local companies supporting Binghamton University’s projects, programs and initiatives.

In his annual report to the University Council last week, Thomas Kelly, vice president for external affairs, described some of the numerous activities undertaken by the division in the past year to support the University and its endeavors.

As the economy and college fund-raising continue to improve steadily, Binghamton’s fund-raising efforts continue to have success. “This has been a year of special initiatives and a banner year for fundraising,” he said.

Special fund-raising endeavors have also been successful with the new $33.1 million Events Center receiving $3.6 million in support, the Anderson Center for the Arts receiving $1.5 million and $500,000 being donated to the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences’ Faculty Development Fund.

The University is also continuing to reach out to its alumni. Projects are now underway to partner the Office of Parent and Alumni Relations with the BU Foundation for fundraising, along with the Career Development Center to offer career assistance for students.

“It is often the Alumni Office that does the friendraising so the fundraising can take place,” Kelly said.

Earlier this semester, Alumni Relations launched the Binghamton University Online Community — with 7,000 alumni since posting their profile information and 2,600 volunteering to help with its implementation.

“This is just a start,” Kelly said. “We are adding profiles each day. “We are hoping to connect the students with the alumni so they can receive career assistance.”

From the Alumni Journal and Inside BU to Binghamton Research and the Believe newsletters, the University is also continuing its outreach to the community. Plans are also underway to transform the Alumni Journal into a University magazine.

The University is reaching out to the students as well through such initiatives as the implementation of a new website for prospective undergraduate students and the designing of a new welcome brochure, along with continued enrollment support.

In other business, the University Council also reviewed and unanimously approved amendments to the 2004-05 BU Rules of Student Conduct.
