Clinical psychology program earns national recognition

By : Cait Anastis

It has been banner year for the faculty in Binghamton’s clinical psychology program, which earned reaccreditation for the next seven years and was chosen as the Outstanding Training Program of the Year.

The award, presented by the Association of the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, recognizes the program’s significant contribution to training behavior therapists or in promoting behavior therapy.

The national honor from one of the major organizations supporting clinical research will help bring additional attention to the program, said Peter Donovick, director of the clinical studies program.

Combined with the high marks the program received during the reaccredidation process, earning a seven-year accreditation in August, the award will help the program continue to attract students.

“It certainly helps in graduate student recruitment and faculty recruitment,” Donovick said. “Because we have excellent students I am not sure we can get better than excellent students. But had we not been reaccredited, it would have had a negative affect on recruitment.”

He credited two of the program’s assistant professors — Meredith Coles and Brandon Gibb — with compiling the documentation needed to compete for the award.

The Outstanding Training Program Award was not the only recognition Binghamton received from the AABT. James MacKillop, a graduate student in the program earned the organization’s Virginia A. Rosewell Student Dissertation Award, while program alumnus Terry Keane was honored with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions and leadership in the field.
