University receives federal funding
The grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services program, announced by Con-gressman Maurice Hinchey in March, will support University efforts to provide a supportive climate, expose students to rigorous academic programs and help more students consider and attend graduate school.
About 45 percent of Binghamton’s students meet the program’s eligibility requirements, and more than 1,100 stu-dents have a high need for the services provided by this program. Freshmen entering the program attend orientation sessions to help them make the transition to University life, undergo diagnostic testing to determine math and writing skill levels and meet with academic advisors, peer mentors and financial aid counselors. Binghamton is one of five New York state institutions receiving a share of $1.5 million in funding for the Student Support Service Program. Others include Broome, Orange County and Ulster County com-munity colleges and SUNY New Paltz.
