INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Binghamton native to speak on emerging technology

Peter Bloom, managing director of General Atlantic, LLC, a worldwide private equity firm that focuses exclusively on global investing in information technology and telecommunications businesses, will speak on “Emerging Technology: Charting a Course in the Age of Blogs and Identity Theft,” at the Harpur Forum breakfast on Wednesday, April 13, at the Binghamton Club in downtown Binghamton. The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and the program begins at 8 a.m.

Bloom graduated from Binghamton Central High School. As a senior, he matriculated full time at Binghamton University, before moving on to receive his bachelor’s degree in computer studies and economics from Northwestern University.

Bloom’s extensive background in technology gives him a unique perspective when advising portfolio companies for General Atlantic, a company with approximately $4 billion in capital available for investment, and investments in nearly 100 companies in nearly 70 countries. In his current position, he is responsible for assisting senior management teams, making technology assessments of General Atlantic investment prospects and providing guidance on emerging technology trends.

A member of the New York Electronic Crimes Task Force, Business Executives for National Security, the Information Technology Advisory Board of the New School for Social Research and the British Petroleum Digital and Communications Technology Advisory Board, Bloom serves as a judge for the annual $500,000 Lemelson/MIT Prize for Invention. He is also a special advisor to organizations within the U.S. government.

Recipient of the Carnegie Mellon/AMS Award for Achievement in Managing Information Technology, Bloom is chairman of DonorsChoose, an educational charity that employs the Internet and specially developed software to enable individuals to directly support student and teacher proposals in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago and North Carolina. He is also chairman and founder of Peak Rescue, which trains first responders in advanced technical rescue techniques, and a board member of the Food Bank for New York City, which feeds over 200,000 hungry New Yorkers each day.

The Harpur Forum serves business, professional and community leaders by bringing nationally known authorities to speak at Forum functions throughout the year. Limited seating is available on a first come, first-served basis at a cost of $10 for faculty and staff and $5 for students. Call Elena Backlund at 777-4390 for reservations.
