By : Gail Glover

Two Binghamton University students have been awarded William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Awards by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

JoAnna Nangle, a junior studying mathematics, and Nate Hilburger, a senior double major in history and anthro-pology, were selected from approximately 100 candidates nationally for the award, which recognizes outstanding university students who are active participants, employees or volunteers in collegiate recreational sports departments.

Nangle was recognized for her work as student manager in the University’s FitSpace facility and as a nationally certified personal trainer. She has shown leadership skills through her involvement as a teacher assistant for a FitSpace internship class and student representative for the Recreation Center Task Force and marketing sub-committee. Nangle was awarded the sophomore Student Employee of the Year award in 2003-04, and won the Campus Recreational Services 2003-04 Most Outstanding Employee — FitSpace award.

Hilburger was recognized for three years of service to the University’s Campus Recreational Services where he has been employed as a front desk attendant, building supervisor and head building supervisor. He is certified in CPR/AED and first aid. Hilburger is a student representative for the Recreation Center Task Force and a member of the marketing sub-committee. He is a member of a variety of national honor societies including Phi Alpha Theta, Golden Key and Phi Eta Sigma. In addition, Hilburger was awarded the Campus Recreational Services 2003-04 Male Participant of the Year award.

Named after NIRSA’s founder, Dr. William N. Wasson, the awards recognize student who demonstrate self-improvement through leadership, academic success, activities, volunteerism and promoting inclusion.
