Students place first in Russian competition
Sonja Seidel and Kathy Walsh shared first place honors during the competition held Saturday, April 16, at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. The pair, with teammates Allison Parker and Kathy Bradley, competed against students from Hamilton College, Union College, Syracuse University, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Students were required to recite a poem, give a three-minute talk about themselves without notes, read a text with only a minute’s preparation time and take a written grammar test, said Nancy Tittler, a senior lecturer in the University’s German, Russian and East Asian Languages program.
This is the third year that Binghamton has competed and the second time a Binghamton student has been awarded first place, Tittler said. “This is the first year we have had a tie,” she said.
Next April, the competition will be hosted on campus.
