Professor honored in Italy

Sandro Sticca, professor of French and comparative literature, was recently recognized in his native Italy for his critical analysis of the poetry of Angela Barone.

Sticca was honored in January during a trip to Italy, where the governor of the region of Rome presented him with a replica of the emblem of the capital city. He said he hopes that the critical analysis will help introduce Barone’s work to a wider audience. Barone began writing poetry at the age of 14 and two years later published a collection of 38 poems.

“It’s amazing how, at a young age, she can provide profound insights into grief, unhappiness, death and the existential anguish of people,” Sticca said. “She has a deep concept of what it means to be a person of the world.” Barone has her own connection to Binghamton University, having spent several months on campus learning English, and having composed a series of poems inspired by her time at the University.
