Student earns accolades from USA Today
Ravi Gupta, a Binghamton University science, public policy and philosophy major from Staten Island, N.Y., received an honorable mention in the prestigious USA Today All-USA College Academic Team competition. The program honors undergraduates as representatives of
all outstanding students at the nation’s colleges and universities. Judges look for those who excel in scholarship and leadership roles on and off campus.
In 2004, Gupta’s leadership was rewarded when he received a $26,000 scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. One of only 77 winners selected from among 609 candidates, he was chosen on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability and likelihood of “making a difference.”
Gupta has taught English and science to children in Ghana while raising money to build a school there. He founded Binghamton Students for Students International, a Student Association-chartered group, which raises awareness and funds for students in third-world countries; and Atuu International, a charity registered with the state, which raises scholarship funds for students in Ghana.
Gupta has also served as a teaching assistant, captain of the debate team, a volunteer for Red Cross blood drives and a tutor through the Center for Academic Excellence, donating all his wages to Atuu International.
