Debate team heads to national tournament

Debate team heads to national tournament Freshmen Matt Malia and Jake Gartman, who chose Binghamton for its growing debate team, have qualified for the National Debate Tournament. The oldest debate tournament in the United States, and one of the very few remaining tournaments where teams need to qualify to attend, accepts 62 two-person teams from across the country.

To qualify, Malia and Gartman competed in the district qualifier for six rounds. The top five teams go onto the national tournament. Qualifying for the national tournament was not the team’s only recent victory. Binghamton’s Dan Weiser and Jeremy Levine won their third tournament in a row, taking home the Northeast Regional championship, after beating the Uni-versity of Vermont in a 2-1 decision in the final round.

exciting to be the first team at Binghamton to take home the regional championship, especially after only a year of debating. It feels strange to be ranked so high so soon,” Levine said. The team had only advanced to semi-finals in the past.”

“This only makes me more focused on wanting to win novice nationals,” Weiser said. The novice nationals will be held in March at Georgetown University.

Looking ahead, the team hopes to finish in the top 10 in the nation this year.
