Harpur Forum to welcome activist minister

The Rev. Joan Brown Campbell will kick off this year’s Harpur Forum breakfast series when she speaks Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Binghamton Club. Her speech will be titled “We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For.”

Campbell, director of the religion department at the Chautauqua Institution, also is chair of the Global Women’s Peace Initiative, an international network of women who stimulate reconciliation efforts in areas of conflict.

Campbell was the first woman to serve as executive director of the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches and the first ordained woman to be general secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States.

In these roles, she worked with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and brought him to her own congregation. She served as an honorary election monitor in the election of Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa.

Campbell, who traveled with President Bill Clinton to the funeral of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, has also led peace missions to the Middle East.

The Harpur Forum breakfast meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. and Campbell’s program will begin at 8 a.m. University faculty and staff members may attend for $10; students pay $5. For more details, call 777-4390.
