INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Campus Rec aims to improve fitness options in winter

Campus Recreational Services has created two programs to help the campus community stay in shape this semester.

One focuses on students’ and employees’ families, while the other offers indoor space for people who want to walk for exercise during the winter.

“These programs tie into the mission of our department,” said Janice L. Bennett, associate director of Campus Recreational Services.

On the first Saturday of every month, the East Gym will be open from 9-10:45 a.m. for Family Hours. Students, faculty and staff can bring their children in to swim and/or play basketball or volleyball.

There is no charge for this program.

The sponsoring adult must have a valid BU ID card with East Gym access and can bring up to three children as well as a partner or spouse.

“It’ll promote healthy lifestyles for Binghamton University families,” Bennett said. “Getting children active is a concern for a lot of people as obesity problems continue, and the more we can do to help fight that the better.”

Bennett, who has three young children, said she also knows the value of a place where kids can run around and burn some energy, especially during the winter months.

She doesn’t know what to expect in terms of turnout for Family Hours, but said the program might be offered more frequently if there’s a big demand for it.

In addition, Campus Recreational Services, in conjunction with the Events Center, is now offering students, faculty and staff who wish to walk or run inside during the winter months a place to do so.

From noon-1 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, the track in the Events Center will be open. From 6-8 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, space will be available in the East Gym. Weekend hours will also be offered in the East Gym. “We’ve had lots of requests for this,” said Bennett, who noted that people are looking for alternatives to getting on a treadmill while it’s cold outside.

A valid BU ID card must be presented for access to either facility and clean, dry shoes are required.
