Foreign TV programs available

Students, faculty and staff can now access international television programs from their computers.

Languages Across the Curriculum (LXC) has purchased a licensing agreement from SCOLA, a nonprofit educational organization that rebroadcasts programs from around the world.

SCOLA, accessible through Blackboard, features four channels with shows from nearly 70 countries in some 60 languages. Content includes current events, arts and culture, history and variety programming. Users can watch live-stream videos or save clips for later viewing.

“This has the ability to access the language resources that are sitting untapped into the classroom,” said Suronda Gonzalez, director of LXC. “It provides a way to internationalize the content.”

She noted that students and instructors alike will be empowered to bring international perspectives into classes on topics ranging from theater to geography to religion. One channel designed for language study includes transcripts and translations of programs.

Beyond lending an international view to classes or aiding in language study, the programming can also help foreign students keep up with news from home.

On one recent day, programs included news from Bucharest, Lima and Jerusalem, a Cuban children’s show and a Japanese business program.

The Technology Training Center helped Gonzalez resolve technical issues with SCOLA, although it’s still best to use the Firefox, Mozilla or Safari browsers to access the programs.

To view SCOLA, first log into Blackboard at http://blackboard.binghamton.edu. Click on “view SCOLA” and then click the “watch now” button under Videostream Service. Select “Watch SCOLA Now” to see the programming guide and choose something to watch.
