Signs help deter speeding
“I believe these signs do act as a deterrent to people speeding,” said John Schwartz, chief of University Police. “Once they see them, they slow down.”
One near the crosswalk from Academic A and B has been up and running for more than a month. Additional signs are planned near the West Gym, between the Lecture Hall and Hinman College and, for drivers headed in the other direction, near Dickinson Dining Hall.
The signs use radar to detect how fast vehicles are going. That speed is then flashed up in lights directly under the posted speed limit.
“We’ve witnessed cars hitting their brakes” as they pass the sign near Academic A and B, Schwartz said.
This is just the latest step as University Police try to ensure that motorists and pedestrians follow the rules and look out for one another. They’re also using new reflective paint in crosswalks and reminding motorists about the rules concerning internal drives on campus.
