The English Department celebrated the 40th anniversary of its graduate program April 28 with speeches, poetry and the announcement of a new gift to the library.

President Lois B. DeFleur offered her congratulations to the assembled faculty members and graduate students. She also complimented the department on its vision and intellectual achievement.

Alex Huppé, son of the late Bernard F. Huppé, a founding professor of Harpur College and former chairman of the English Department, announced during the celebration that he has created an endowment to honor his father, a medieval scholar. “I’m a great believer, as was my father, in libraries,” said Alex Huppé, a 1969 Binghamton graduate. “You do not have a great university without a great library.”

He will contribute $50,000 and a private foundation will join him in the $100,000 project. The donations will result in a reading room that will be both useful and beautiful, Huppé said, as well as an endowment that will fund acquisitions of books and documents.

John Meador, director of the University Libraries, called Special Collections, which played host to the event, the heart of the library.

“The library is the laboratory for the humanities,” he noted.

Other speakers at the celebration included Donald Blake, a graduate of the program who is now associate dean of Harpur College; department Chair Susan Strehle; Professor Emeritus Grant Webster, who chronicled the department’s history; Professor Emeritus Martin Bidney, who created a sonnet sequence for the occasion; Deborah Poe, editor of Harpur Palate; and Graduate Director Elizabeth Tucker, who organized the event.
