INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Craner named vice president

Marcia Craner, senior associate vice president for alumni and development and executive director of the Binghamton University Foundation, has been appointed vice president for external affairs, President Lois B. DeFleur announced last week.

“Marcia Craner has a depth of knowledge and experience at Binghamton that has helped shape our highly successful development efforts and will continue to do so as we move ahead with our second comprehensive gifts campaign,” DeFleur said. “The strength of the relationships she has built and her passion for Binghamton University have brought us success. We’re pleased that Marcia will assume an even greater leadership role in both development and communications to help us achieve the goals established in our strategic plan to garner additional private support and visibility on the national level.”

At Binghamton University for 23 years, initially as director of alumni and parent relations, Craner currently works with senior leadership on prospect strategies, gift planning and positioning the University for its second comprehensive gifts campaign.

“I’m thrilled to assume the role of vice president at an institution I care deeply about,” Craner said. “During my time at Binghamton, I’ve achieved pers

onal and professional goals by taking risks and accepting new challenges. As we embark on a second comprehensive gifts campaign for Binghamton, I’m confident that we will be successful at achieving our fundraising goals and the aspirations laid out in our strategic plan.”

Binghamton, like all great universities, has strong alumni, fundraising and communications programs, Craner said. “We have a wonderful story to tell about public higher education and I hope to build additional partnerships both internally and externally, leverage resources and think strategically to take us to the next phase in our development.”

Before coming to Binghamton, Craner served as director of alumni affairs and assistant director of communications and development for Geneseo.

She earned a bachelor of arts in art history and communications from Geneseo and a master of arts in social science from Binghamton. Craner is also a graduate of the Kellogg Center for Leadership Program at Binghamton and the Harvard University Executive Leadership Program. She holds certification as a Certified Fund Raising Executive from the American Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Craner replaces Thomas Kelly, who is retiring from the vice presidential post. She will assume her new duties on July 3.
