Finance major to lead Student Association
When he was elected president of Broome Hall as a freshman, he swore he’d never run for president of Newing College. But that’s just what he did as a sophomore. He won, too.
Schiffman, now a junior, was recently elected Student Association president. His priorities include moving the BUC$ system off campus, reducing paperwork and streamlining the group registration process.
“I like being able to see things change,” he said, “so people are happy, not just sitting back and complaining.” Schiffman said he sees student government as a way to advocate for students and to advocate their involvement in campus life. The Student Association is also a service provider, he said, helping to solve problems and find ways to connect people with opportunities on campus.
Schiffman, 20, of Hewlett, belongs to Alpha Sigma Phi. The finance major is part of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars Program in the School of Management and belongs to the Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key honor societies.
He’s not sure yet about his career plans. He likes the world of finance, but has also thought about becoming a dentist. Schiffman said the student body and the tremendous variety of student groups are among Binghamton’s best qualities.
“There are really, really smart people here,” he said. “I understand why they call it the Ivy of the SUNYs. And there are so many opportunities to do things here. There is something for everybody.”
