INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Student researcher focuses on migration

Jennifer Hinojosa, a senior from Long Island, presented her research during the Race, Ethnicity and Place Conference last week at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Hinojosa, who is majoring in sociology and history with a minor in geography, focused her research on ethnic migration, concentrating on Latinos in Columbus, Ohio and Orlando, Florida. She was one of 18 Binghamton University students to participate in the McNair Scholars research program last summer.

The McNair Program is designed to increase the number of low-income, first-generation and underrepresented minority students attending graduate school and receiving doctorates.

With mentor John W. Frazier, professor of geography, Hinojosa is studying the trends of population settlements. She wants to analyze why there are divisions among the Latino population and devise ways to help Latinos have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Frazier, who is also one of the founders of the conference, accompanied Hinojosa to Texas.

“I have been supervising Jennifer’s research for the past five months,” Frazier said. “I have found Jennifer to be inquisitive, bright, energetic and dedicated. I really enjoy working with her and feel that she has a bright future.”

Hinojosa, whose first language is Spanish, wants to help young people in situations similar to hers receive the best possible education. “I want to implement policy making and incorporate programs, such as increasing ESL in schools,” she said.

When Hinojosa is not busy with her studies, she volunteers as a translator back home at Mercy Medical Hospital and takes part in benefits such as Relay for Life and the CHOW Walk.

“My parents are my inspiration because they make the best out of every situation,” Hinojosa said. “Because of them, I am here doing this.”
