INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Young actor strives to be unpredictable

Stage productions were a spontaneous alternative to football for Kyle Anderson in high school. Now, Anderson’s a college senior who will graduate with a degree in theatre and plans to pursue a career in acting.

“Acting sounded like fun and a lot less painful than football practice,” the Queens resident recalled.

To gain experience in the field, Anderson worked as an apprentice during summer 2004 at the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Minnesota. At Binghamton, he has starred in productions such as Macbeth, Twelfth Night, A Raisin in the Sun, The Comedy of Asses and Alcestes.

He’s now preparing for his next show, Proof, which opens Oct. 13 on campus.

“It’s definitely my favorite show so far because it revolves around family relationships, yet maintains a sense of humor,” said Anderson, a member of fraternity Zeta Beta Tau.

Proof features just four characters, two women and two men. But landing a part hasn’t left Anderson less modest.

“I don’t really know what kind of advice I would offer young actors because I’m still learning too,” Anderson said. “I do know that it’s important to be believable and interesting on stage. I think a good actor should keep his audience not knowing what will happen next — to be unpredictable.”

One of Anderson’s role models is actor Matt Damon because he has an interesting life story. “He went through hard times before he made it big and I respect that,” Anderson said.

Theatre Department Lecturer Carol Hanscom, director of Proof, said she believes Anderson will be able to make a career for himself as an actor.

“He has charm and charisma,” she said. “He’s empathetic and works hard. I love working with him. He listens and responds truthfully. I’d work with him again in a heartbeat.”
