INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

International student makes mark as leader

Wui Ip’s resume reads like that of a much older man.

The 22-year-old has interned at the Mayo Clinic, studied nanobiotechnology at Cornell University and completed an honors thesis in chemistry. He helps students prepare for the working world by critiquing their public speaking and offering mock job interviews at the Center for Excellence in Student Leadership.

After that, Ip starts to sound a bit more like the fifth-year college senior he is. This third-year resident assistant is also a former Educational Opportunity Program tutor and past president of Chinese Christian Fellowship. He enjoys playing guitar and volleyball.

Ip is double majoring in chemistry and biology. He grew up in Macau, China, about an hour from Hong Kong.

“I really want to use my time so well that I don’t waste my parents’ money,” he said.

Ip hopes to attend medical school in the United States because he enjoys this country’s higher education system and its open, intellectual atmosphere. After that, he’s not sure what he’ll do.

“I want to contribute what I’ve learned here back in China,” he said.

Ip’s academic achievements aside, his passion is leadership. He led the student government of his high school and at Binghamton has devoted time to helping others learn about topics ranging from programming to conflict resolution. He even has a weekly radio show on WHRW called Got Leadership?

“I was interested in helping other students get involved on campus and also to let them know there are so many resources,” said Ip, who last year was a faculty/student scholar through the XCEL Center.

Debora Clinton Callaghan, senior associate director of Campus Life, said Ip is exceptional in many ways.

“He’s just very hard working, very motivated to do something for the Binghamton community,” she said. “He’s the kind of student who will take the extra time to make a difference.”
