INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Binghamton named a top value

Binghamton University has again been named one of the best values in public education by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.

Binghamton is the second-best value in the country for out-of-state students and comes in fifth for in-state students, according to the magazine’s new rankings.

“We’re pleased that Kiplinger’s has recognized the University’s commitment to quality and to affordable higher education,” President Lois B. DeFleur said. “We take pride in offering our students a top-flight experience without accumulating significant debt.”

Academic quality measurements such as SAT scores, admission rates and student-faculty ratios carry more weight than costs (almost two-thirds of the total) used in the rankings. Researchers used academic-quality scores and average debt at graduation figures to break ties.

Kiplinger’s publishes its data online and allows readers to rank schools according to the factors that are most important to them. But even when the list is rearranged by other categories, Binghamton stacks up with the best.

Binghamton is among the most selective schools on the list, accepting just 43 percent of applicants, which puts it in eighth place in that category. Binghamton’s 67 percent four-year graduation rate ranks fifth overall; its six-year rate of 79 percent is 14th overall. The University came in 20th for students’ average debt at graduation, $14,734.

The Kiplinger’s list and other rankings are important tools for prospective students and their parents as they provide good information for families beginning the college search process.

Other publications also consistently cite Binghamton’s quality. The University has been among the elite top 50 public national universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual list for 10 years, coming in 38th this year. And the 2007 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges calls the University the “premier public in the Northeast,” citing the Binghamton Scholars and Discovery programs.
