INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Soccer player values time on field, in office

Peter Sgeuglia, 21, of Albany, knows how to balance work and recreation.

Sgeuglia, a senior philosophy, politics and law major and member of Binghamton’s varsity soccer team, maintains good grades and attained an exclusive internship with Merrill Lynch last summer.

Sgeuglia transferred from the University at Albany, and was recruited to Binghamton by soccer coach Paul Marco. He originally planned on a career in law, but when the opportunity to intern at a prestigious financial company came along, Sgeuglia felt the need to broaden his horizons.

“Merrill Lynch in Albany only accepts three or four interns, and I worked for the vice president of all New York branches,” not including the city, Sgeuglia said.

The experience turned Sgeuglia on to becoming a financial analyst.

“I became like a regular employee, and not just an intern,” he said.

Sgeuglia’s day began at 8:15 a.m. this summer. His daily tasks included meetings with the administrative assistant, researching history on stocks and then analyzing them.

“It’s all about building personal relationships and appealing to clients,” Sgeuglia said.

He said Merrill Lynch looks for well-rounded interns. His experience in a team environment was appealing to the company.

Sgeuglia, a soccer player for 17 years, said participating on the Binghamton team has had a tremendous impact on his academics. Teammates and coaches look out for each other like brothers and help each other stay focused.

“Peter puts in tremendous effort in whatever he does,” Marco said. “He is upbeat and has a great spirit and can talk to anyone about anything. Peter truly cares about other people.”

Sgeuglia hopes to work for Merrill Lynch after graduation.
